Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to return to Michigan next week as part of her nationwide “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour, the White House announced Tuesday.
Harris is set to speak in Grand Rapids on Feb. 22, just days before Michigan’s Feb. 27 presidential primary. President Joe Biden traveled to Macomb County earlier this month and met with UAW workers following the union’s endorsement. Former President Donald Trump, the GOP frontrunner, is set to campaign in Waterford Township on Saturday.
The vice president’s tour kicked off in Waukesha County, Wis., on Jan. 22, which would have been the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The U.S. Supreme Court in June 2022 overturned the landmark decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion.
Since then, Harris has held more than 60 convenings in 20 states with hundreds of elected officials, health care providers, faith leaders, students and advocates.
Michigan is expected to be a key swing state this fall. In November 2022, Michigan voters approved Proposal 3 enshrining abortion rights in the state constitution. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and other top Democratic leaders endorsed the measure. Whitmer, a national campaign co-chair for Biden’s reelection, has been stressing the importance of abortion rights in the 2024 election during the runup to Michigan’s primary.
This will be Harris’ fourth trip to Michigan since she was sworn in. Her last visit was in January 2023 when she spoke about solutions to the climate crisis in Ann Arbor.
