Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Thursday morning that her 2024 State of the State address will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24 in the Michigan House Chambers in front of a joint session of the Michigan House and Senate.
“Michigan’s story can be seen in our people’s stories,” said Whitmer. “We are a state full of humble, hardworking people with simple dreams for themselves and their families. After one of the most successful years in our state’s history, we’ve delivered on our promises to Michiganders, ranging from record tax cuts for families and free school meals for students to safer communities and more personal freedoms under the law. I look forward to sharing my vision for how we continue getting things done so everyone can build a brighter future in Michigan.”
The address will be Whitmer’s sixth State of the State, but the first following a full year of Democratic control in Lansing and a long list of legislative accomplishments. According to the release, the governor plans to lay out proposals that will “lower costs, continue record investments in education from preschool to college, expand access to safe and affordable homes for Michigan families, keep protecting our seniors (and), boost our state’s economy to new heights …”
One proposal already announced to be in the address will be the “MI Vehicle Rebate” plan, which aims to boost sales of new electric, hybrid and traditional combustion vehicles in Michigan. The plan will utilize a new state tax rebate to lower the cost of a new electric, hybrid, or traditional vehicle between $1,000 and $2,500 per vehicle. When combined with a $7,500 federal incentive, Whitmer’s office said Michiganders could save up to $10,000. Whitmer plans to fund the proposal with a $25 million allocation, which she will formally request of the Legislature on Jan. 24.
